Saguenay international
short film festival

For the first time at REGARD, we welcome two award-winning giants of the sound world, Sylvain Bellemare and Bernard Gariépy. The masterclass is to be moderated by Manon Dumais, who will ask them about their work together, their journey and their significant collaborations, in tandem or solo with Denis Villeneuve, Philippe Falardeau and others. The masterclass will also be the perfect opportunity to demystify major art forms, little known to the general public: sound design and sound mixing. How will a movie grab you? What makes your blood freeze? What makes a scene so memorable? The sound, of course!

Sylvain Bellemare – Sound designer

Sylvain Bellemare is a sound designer from Quebec. Active since 1993, he has worked on more than 150 fiction and documentary films and collaborated with Denis Villeneuve, Stéphane Lafleur, Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, Bertand Bonello, Louise Archambault, Philippe Falardeau, Monia Chokri, Damián Szifrón, Sebastien Marnier, André Turpin, Renée Blanchard, Ian Lagarde, Richard Brouillette and Marc André Forcier, amongst others. He won an Oscar for sound editing with Arrival by Denis Villeneuve (2016), and a Bafta for best sound (with his colleagues Claude La Haye and Bernard Gariépy Strobl) for the same film. The film is the recipient of 11 other Best Sound awards, in addition to 23 nominations. Bellemare was a sound engineer from 1993 to 2007 on about 15 projects after having studied anthropology at the University of Montreal from 1990 to 1992.

Bernard Gariépy Strobl - Sound mixer

Born in Montreal to a sound engineer mother and recognised sound mixing father, Bernard Gariépy Strobl followed in the family footsteps and began mixing in his early twenties. He worked with his father for ten years before continuing his career at Vision Global and Mels where he held the position of head mixer. Bernard has worked on nearly 200 films and TV series. He has been nominated more than 30 times and was the recipient of a dozen national and international awards, including an Oscar nomination and Bafta winner for Denis Villeneuve's film Arrival.
